A widely shared post on Threads shows Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez, presumably wearing Argentina jerseys, in the stands, along with the caption: “He stayed to cheer for his wife’s country.”

The statement implies that Ronaldo, following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup, decided to stay and support Argentina due to his relationship with Georgina Rodriguez. Similar posts have also been made here on Instagram and Facebook (see here and here).

Given the popularity of the post and the attention it received online, DUBAVA confirmed this claim.

Examination

DUBAVA subjected the viral image to digital forensic testing, including examination of its EXIF metadata.

Analysis revealed that the image lacked metadata typically associated with the original photograph. It does not contain information about the camera used, the date the image was taken, GPS location, or device information. Instead, it only preserves the basic properties of the image, such as:

  1. 1. Resolution: 750 × 665 pixels.
  2. 2. Color space: sRGB.
  3. 3. Resolution: 72

The absence of original metadata strongly suggests that the image was edited, resaved, or manipulated before being published online.

Further forensic testing using JPEGsnoop confirmed that there was no EXIF data, but Photoshop metadata indicated that the image had been edited or saved using Adobe Photoshop. This is contained in numbers designated by special instructions that contain internal Adobe identifiers.

Moreover, not a single reputable sports broadcaster or news organization, including FIFA, Reuters, BBC Sport, ESPN, Sky Sports or Goal, reported that Cristiano Ronaldo remained at the stadium to support Argentina after the Portugal match. An event of this nature involving a famous athlete at a major tournament would almost certainly be filmed and covered by credible sports media.

DUBAVA also discovered that the caption incorrectly described Georgina Rodriguez as Ronaldo’s wife. Although Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez are in a long-term relationship and have children, they are not legally married.

Conclusion

The image circulating online shows clear signs of digital manipulation and does not contain the metadata expected from an original photo. The statement also incorrectly stated that Georgina Rodriguez is Ronaldo’s wife, and there is no credible evidence that Cristiano Ronaldo stayed to support Argentina after Portugal’s withdrawal from the competition.
