At least 11 people have died and 19 are missing in a forest fire in southern Spain, Andalusia regional leader Juanma Moreno said.

Another local official said four of the victims were believed to be British.

Hundreds of people are trying to contain the fire, which Moreno said was caused by a downed power line. The flames then spread to the wooded area around Los Gallardos, Almeria.

This summer, a prolonged heat wave with temperatures near 40°C (104F) sparked forest fires across southern Europe.

Firefighters are responding to major incidents in France, Portugal and Spain, with thousands of people forced to flee their homes.

The bodies of 11 victims were found in and around the small village of Bedar, near Los Gallardos.

Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health and emergency minister, said the fire was complex and fast-moving and most or even all of the victims could have been foreign nationals. The regional government had previously reported 12 deaths, although Sanz said that figure was preliminary.

Four people were found locked in their car and other victims were found elsewhere, apparently trying to escape the fire, Sanz said. He said the four passengers in the car were believed to be of “British origin” and that the car’s steering wheel was on the right.

BBC News has contacted the UK Foreign Office.

Regional President Juanma Moreno called the deaths a tragedy and warned that the death toll could rise significantly. “Our hearts are heavy and we are devastated,” he wrote on social media.

Among the injured were a man who was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and another who suffered burns. Four people were treated at the scene for minor burns and breathing problems caused by the heavy smoke.

The fire also led to road closures and 1,000 residents were evacuated, emergency services said.
