Zlatko Dalic has resigned after nine years as Croatia head coach following their World Cup defeat to Portugal.

The 59-year-old took charge of the team in 2017 and led Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final and third place four years later.

Croatia exited the postponed 2020 European Championship in the round of 16 and failed to qualify for the Euro 2024 knockout stages, although they finished second in the 2023 Nations League.

“After almost nine years, head coach Zlatko Dalic has decided to end his incredibly successful chapter in Croatia,” the Croatian Football Federation said in a statement.

“Head Coach, thank you for everything – the victories, the achievements, the qualifications, the medals, the unity, the respect and your unwavering commitment to fight for Croatia, both on and off the field.”

A 4-2 defeat to England in the opening match of this summer’s World Cup was followed by victories over Panama and Ghana.

Gonzalo Ramos’ 94th-minute winner in the first knockout game ended their bid to reach the final stage of a third World Cup in a row.

Captain Luka Modric, 40, has also likely played his last major tournament and a new era for Croatia is about to begin.
