On the occasion of the United States’ 250th anniversary this Saturday, July 4, Donald Trump promised “the greatest fireworks display in history” – despite the capricious and stormy weather conditions. But the celebrations almost turned into tragedy. A Delta Air Lines plane was hit by one of the fireworks’ missiles as it approached Chicago Midway International Airport. The plane took off from Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, at 7:36 p.m. (Eastern Time) before landing in Chicago, Illinois at 8:38 p.m. (local time), according to the specialized website FlightAware.

Despite the impact, the plane landed safely and no injuries were reported. After the incident, NBC Chicago reported radio communications between the crew and the control tower. “Control tower, our plane has just been hit by fireworks. We are continuing our flight,” warns a crew member.
