2026 World Cup: four CONMEBOL teams reach the 1/8 finals of the World Cup

The Round of 16 stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup left a positive balance for CONMEBOL teams. The four South Americans involved in this event managed to reach the round of 16: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Colombia remain in the race.

Thanks to outstanding performances from Messi, Gabriel Martinelli and Orlando Gill in Paraguay’s historic qualification on penalties against Germany, South America maintains a strong presence among the top 16 teams in the tournament.

Brazil paved the way

Canarinha became the first CONMEBOL team to secure a place in the round of 16, beating Japan 2-1 in Houston.

Casemiro equalized in the second half and Martinelli sealed the comeback in stoppage time to keep the team’s dream alive under Carlo Ancelotti. Thus, Verdeamarela extends the number of unbeaten matches at the final stage of the World Cup to three.

Paraguay knocked out Germany

La Albirroja starred in one of the highlights of the round, eliminating Germany in a penalty shootout.
