Don’t expect to see Jannik Sinner’s parents in the Wimbledon Royal Box any time soon, although they are more than welcome.

The defending champion was asked why his mother and father were not present for his first match on Center Court on Monday when last year’s women’s winner Iga Swiatek welcomed her father and sister to the Royal Box the next day.

It turns out that Sinner’s parents were also invited, but such fashionable events are clearly not their thing.

“I know my parents. I asked them, but it was impossible,” Sinner said in Italian after reaching the fourth round with a narrow win over Jenson Brooksby on Court No. 1.

Sinner grew up in a small alpine village in northern Italy, where his parents, Hanspeter and Sieglinda, worked in a ski lodge. His father was a cook and his mother was a waitress.

“We barely even discussed it,” Sinner said with a laugh about the Royal Box invitation. “They have other things to do, and I understand that.”

His parents actually came to last year’s final and sat in the player’s box to watch their son beat Carlos Alcaraz for the title.

However, there was a famous parent in the Royal Box on Monday to watch The Sinner. David Beckham took his mother to the match.
