The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that there will be no immediate relief from the rain. In its notification at 7:00 pm on July 4, 2026, it placed Mumbai and Thane under red alert and Konkan region and Pune under orange alert.
The Konkan region and the Ghats area of Pune district are expected to receive very heavy and prolonged rainfall with risk of minor landslides, while a yellow alert has been issued for Pune.
Minister of State for Disaster Management Girish Mahajan has urged citizens not to step out of their homes unless absolutely necessary. He said rescue teams had been deployed to help residents affected by the heavy rains, and roads were being cleared of congestion.
“More than 200 mm of rain fell in 12 hours, that’s very heavy rain – I mean for Mumbai it’s very heavy rain. I would request all the tourists and those who go out for sightseeing. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed. Our teams are posted near the manholes. Traffic is being cleared. People are coming out while sitting during high tide. Most of the accidents happen due to selfies. There is a high number of casualties in places with tourism. Just step out of the house if there is any urgent work”
Due to the rains, many accidents and injuries occurred.
Intense monsoon downpours have already caused widespread civil chaos and traffic disruption across the city, as well as tragic casualties in the suburbs. Earlier, heavy rain caused several trees to fall in the western suburbs, blocking several key roads. Rain also had a tragic cost this monsoon season. An 11-year-old student was killed and several others were injured when a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur during heavy rain and strong winds. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also appealed to citizens loitering along the embankment in Worli area and ignoring instructions and warnings from the corporation and police to leave the area as they were seen roaming along the seashore and sitting on parapets here and there.
