French Open champion Alexander Zverev continued his momentum and kept his hopes of a second Grand Slam title alive over American Marcos Giron.

The German quickly overcame a draw in the third round and won on the first court with a score of 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

Zverev, who lost his first three major finals, is looking to cash in on the absence of two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz.

He lost in the first round last year and has never advanced beyond the fourth round at SW19 in nine previous attempts.

“I feel different than last year: I feel like I’m playing better tennis in important moments and I feel more confident,” Zverev said.

“I want to keep moving forward, play more great matches and enjoy my time here on the court.

“Winning in Paris, winning such a title helps everyone. It doesn’t matter how many titles you win. For me, this was my first.”

Zverev’s hopes of going the distance are boosted by the fact that he will not be able to face either defending champion Jannik Sinner or seventh-seeded Novak Djokovic before the final.

Next up for world number three is 13th-ranked Czech Jiri Lehecka, who beat Spaniard Jaume Munar in four sets.

Earlier, fifth seed Alex de Minaur lost his first set of the tournament but defeated American Zachary Svaida 6-2 5-7 6-2 6-4.

Australian De Minaur faces a fourth-round match against ninth-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli, who recorded a dramatic five-set win over Russian Karen Khachanov.

Cobolli, who lost in the French Open final last month, was beaten in the first set but recovered to win on the second court 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-2.

Sixth seed American Taylor Fritz, who reached the semi-finals last year, also came from a set down to defeat Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-5).

10th seed Alexander Bublik will be Fritz’s next opponent in the fourth round after beating American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (13-11), 4-6, 6-3.
