Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi said he was pleased with Brahim Diaz’s performance despite the Real Madrid striker having yet to score a goal at this World Cup.

It’s in stark contrast to the form Dias showed at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, where he scored five goals in seven games and Morocco were eventually crowned champions after Senegal walked off the field during a controversial final.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Wahby praised Diaz’s work rate and contribution to the team.

“The problem with elite players is that we always expect more from them,” Wahby said.

“It’s true that he hasn’t reached his AFCON level yet, but I don’t judge him just by his goals or assists.

“There were players who replaced him and they weren’t decisive either. We shouldn’t make changes just for the sake of change.”

The 49-year-old continued: “I think Brahim has freedom. We are participating in the World Cup, not AFCON. These are two completely different tournaments.

“He has played a lot, he has already made two decisive passes and I hope he will score goals in this World Cup.”
