The R&A has confirmed that reigning champion golfer Scotty Scheffler will headline the inaugural Heroes Classic at Royal Birkdale on Tuesday 14 July, just days before the 154th Open begins.

The event will see Scheffler, 30, officially bring back the Claret Jug before joining a star-studded field for a new fan-focused showcase to kick off Open week in a more casual setting.

“I’m looking forward to competing in the first Heroes Classic,” said world number one and four-time major champion Scheffler.

“It’s a great concept and a fun way to start the week at Royal Birkdale. Fans will also be interested in immersing themselves in this relaxed atmosphere right before the start of the main championship.”

First Heroes Classic was designed to give viewers the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the biggest names in golf, while celebrating the history of the game and showcasing the R&A’s work in growing the sport around the world.

Scheffler will be joined by a host of major Ryder Cup champions and stars, including Jordan Spieth, Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. Also confirmed are AIG Women’s Champion Miyu Yamashita, Women’s Amateur Champion Paula Martin Sampedro and G4D Open Champion Brendan Lawlor, as well as rugby great Brian Habana.

The exhibition will feature teams of three who will compete on the first, second and ninth holes of Royal Birkdale at Texas Scramble Formatdesigned to maximize player engagement and create an entertaining spectacle for fans.

Chris Gabe, Director of Fan Engagement at The R&A, believes the event will be a unique start to Open Week.

“We are always looking for new ways to enhance the fan experience, and this exhibition brings fans closer to the game and the players they love,” Gabe said.

This announcement also represents the final opportunity for fans to access the championship.

General admission tickets for The Open have sold out, with remaining tickets only available for the Hospitality Experience, Ticket Plus and official Destination packages.

Royal Birkdale will host The Open for the 11th time in 2026.

Southport’s famous clubs last hosted the championship in 2017 when Jordan Spieth claimed his third major title after a dramatic final round win.

The venue also saw Padraig Harrington successfully defend the Claret Jug in 2008 and Tom Watson claim his fifth and final Open title in 1983.
