Renovated guest cottage

Fast forward about a decade. The Goldblums, along with their two sons, Charlie Ocean and River Joe, live happily in the hills above West Hollywood, ensconced in the charming 1930s Spanish Revival home that the actor has occupied for more than four decades. However, the guest house/pool on site was a bit less of a winner. “I would describe the style as edgy 1983,” says Barbara Bestor, the architect tasked with reimagining the structure as a cozy, multi-functional family play area, performance space, gym, home office and guest cottage. “The catalyst for the whole project was the laundry room upgrade,” Jeff notes wryly. “Then we started thinking bigger.”

Working within the existing structure, Bestor raised the ceilings, modernized the building systems, and completely changed the character of the pavilion, reimagining its architectural details in a language more consistent with the main house. “We tried to give it an atmosphere that ties the structure to the broader aesthetic of the property. Call it retroactive historicization,” she says, pointing to signature gestures like new arched doorways, colorful tiles and a pyramidal ceiling above Jeff’s office and cozy nap room. “Jeff and Emily have very playful personalities, and then there are kids. It had to be fun and casual,” she adds.
