Haeran Ryu of South Korea made her first major with a two-stroke victory at the Women’s PGA Championship.
The 25-year-old started the day with a one-stroke lead and lost her place at the top of the leaderboard in a volatile final round with three bogeys in the first five holes.
But she got back on track with five birdies in a two-under-par round to finish on -13 and collect the winner’s check for $1.95 million (ยฃ1.48 million).
The $13 million (ยฃ9.8 million) tournament prize is the largest in women’s golf history.
โI feel like itโs a dream come true because I tried a couple of times to become the main champion, but I didnโt succeed,โ Ryu said.
โToday I did it and Iโm so happy now.โ
It was an incredible comeback for a player who was tied for 70th and 10 shots behind the leader after the first round at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
Canada’s Brooke Henderson and Dewey Weber of the Netherlands led after the start of the round was delayed due to weather conditions, but both finished on -10, tied for third place, Weber’s career-best finish at a major.
Ryu’s compatriot Ina Yoon lost on day three after leading by five but fought back to finish second on -11.
American Nelly Korda, chasing a historic third straight major championship victory, was four shots behind the leader early in play but was unable to carry on and finished tied for eighth at six under.
