LeBron James has announced that he will join the Philadelphia 76ers next season in what he says will be his final NBA contract.

The 41-year-old, the league’s all-time leading scorer, left the Los Angeles Lakers after an eight-year hiatus last month.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat were also rumored to be in the running for the four-time NBA champion.

“I believe I can help the Philadelphia 76ers become a championship team, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to energize a new fan base and begin this incredible journey one last time,” James said on X.external

Earlier this week, James’ former team Miami mistakenly posted a link to James’ “introductory press conference.”

A Heat representative told Reuters.external The video was posted in error by staff preparing for the possibility of James returning to the team with which he won two NBA titles in 2012 and 2013.

On either side of that, James had two games with Cleveland, which drafted James in 2003 and is based near his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

“I will always love Miami and Northeast Ohio will always be my home,” James added.

There will be more to come.
