Everyone lies on their CV, it’s part of life, but it’s little things that you can usually get away with, like saying you’re going out for a drink when you haven’t left yet, or that you think Robbie Williams is talented. The problem, of course, comes when it hits you further down the line, and Paul Rudd knows this all too well.
What’s worse for Rudd is that his little falsification of his biography was accompanied by the additional specter of an unhinged Sir Ben Kingsley who, like anyone who’s ever seen him turn Ray Winstone into a quivering, sunburnt mess, sexy beast will know this is not a fun prospect at all.
This embellishment occurred early in Rudd’s career, long before he could rely on the fact that he had starred in Marvel films or such popular comedies as Friends. In the late 1980s, he was a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York when he had the opportunity to attend an afternoon master class with Kingsley, who had then won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Actor for his work on the 1982 epic. Gandhi.
As Rudd later told Graham Norton, when it came to putting together a résumé, it became a bit “sexy” because he had no acting credits to fall back on.
He recalled: “My manager wrote it down as, ‘Paul played Hamlet in Sir Ben Kingsley’s production.’ I lived in fear that one day he would see my CV!”
Luckily for Rudd, this never happened, unless Kingsley at some point asked for it to be emailed to him when they both found themselves part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Rudd in Ant-Man and Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, who has so far appeared in Iron Man 3, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsand this year’s Disney Plus series Wonder Manwhich was renewed for a second season.
And Rudd’s resume didn’t go uncredited for very long at all, as he had to wait less than five years between graduating from acting school and landing his first major role in a 1995 Hollywood film. ignorantplaying the love interest of Alicia Silverstone’s wealthy high school student Cher Horowitz.

It was also his first worldwide hit, a comedy that earned $88 million at the box office on a budget of just $12 million and launched a prolific career that took off when he was cast as Phoebe Buffay’s boyfriend in Friends in 2002. Thanks to this, he became one of the leading comic book actors in the United States, achieving a number of successes such as Host: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, 40 year old virgin, pregnant, 40 And Forget Sarah Marshallbut for Rudd, this year is all about Marvel again.
