Berlin – According to BILD, on the fourth day after the resignation of Jens Spahn (46 years old, CDU) as head of the Union parliamentary group, his successor was chosen: Thorsten Frei (52 years old, CDU), the previous head of the Federal Chancellery! After several days of searching for the head of the CDU and CSU, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (70 years old) and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (59 years old) agreed with him. BUT: It is still unclear who should follow Frey to the Chancellery!
The CDU is said to announce the proposal around noon. At 15:00. Söder and Merz want to discuss further action with the executive committee of the parliamentary group regarding the telephone switch. As was said, there will be no need for a special session of the Bundestag at first. It has not yet been finally decided whether Merz will restructure his cabinet and, if so, how. He hinted at this in a Sunday summer interview with ZDF.
Lawyer Thorsten Frei, a member of the Bundestag since 2013, is considered popular and highly respected in the parliamentary group. In the Traffic Light Government, he led the parliamentary group under opposition leader Merz as the parliament’s first managing director. He also has good connections with the SPD.
