The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced Sunday that its F-16s intercepted several aircraft violating temporary flight restrictions over New Jersey.
According to NORAD, NORAD F-16 fighter jets intercepted several commercial aircraft that were violating temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster and East Rutherford in New Jersey.
More than 10 general aviation aircraft entered restricted airspace Sunday, including three that NORAD said they had to intercept.

During two interceptions, NORAD aircraft fired flares to attract the attention of the pilots, which could be visible to the public.
NORAD said the flares were deployed “with the highest regard for safety, burn quickly and completely, and pose no danger to people on the ground.”

All general aviation aircraft were removed safely from the area by NORAD aircraft, NORAD said.
“If a NORAD aircraft intercepts a general aviation aircraft, the pilot should immediately go to frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and turn back until further instructions are received on one of those frequencies,” NORAD said.

NORAD urged pilots to check temporary flight restrictions before entering airspace.
“Pilots: Check your Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS) and FAA temporary flight restrictions,” NORAD said.
