Even though the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats and 25 new medical colleges across the country for the academic session 2026-27, Delhi has not received either a new medical college or any increase in the number of MBBS seats, according to the regulator’s latest seat matrix. The approved MBBS admission in the national capital remains 475 seats as per the NMC seat matrix, without any change in the capacity of any existing medical college covered by the notification.

These include 100 seats at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, 125 seats at Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, 50 seats at ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Basaidarapur and 100 seats at Army College of Medical Sciences.

The latest NMC approvals, which brought the total MBBS capacity in the country covered by the seat matrix to 1,36,939 seats, have largely benefited states by providing new medical colleges or increasing enrollment in existing institutions. Delhi, however, was among the jurisdictions where the expansion was not approved.

Among neighboring regions, Chandigarh received 50 additional MBBS seats in Government Medical College and Hospital, increasing the number of seats from 150 to 200, while Jammu and Kashmir added 100 government MBBS seats, with Government Medical College Jammu and Government Medical College Srinagar getting 50 seats each.

In Punjab, there was only an increase of 50 seats in the private sector, while the additional 250 seats in Haryana were entirely in private medical colleges without any expansion in government institutions. Himachal Pradesh got only one additional MBBS seat in Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba.

The notification also introduces stricter guarantees for admission to the upcoming academic session. Private medical colleges seeking approval to open new colleges or increase student enrollment are required to submit an electronic bank guarantee before issuing approval letters. The regulator has also directed counseling bodies and medical colleges not to allow admissions beyond the approved seat matrix, warning that any excess admission will attract regulatory and penal action under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. The seating table will continue to be subject to review based on decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.
