Weather service warns of heavy rain in Bremen and Bremerhaven

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official heavy rain warning level 2 out of 4 in Bremen and Bremerhaven. The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday, July 19, until 3 p.m.

From the second half of the night on Sunday, severe thunderstorms will rise from the northwest. According to DWD, heavy rain of 15 to 25 liters per square meter could occur within an hour, as well as wind gusts up to 60 km/h (Bft 7). The storm is expected to subside by the evening, according to DWD.

There is a risk of isolated, rapid flooding of streets and underground passages, as well as aquaplaning. The reason is the low foothills, which will cause changeable weather on Sunday. Between low pressure over Scandinavia and extensive highs far south in Iceland, a fresh northwesterly flow brings cool sea air to northern Germany.

By Saturday evening, DWD expects wind gusts of about 55 km/h (Bft 7) from northwest to west in the north and along the coast, with occasional storm gusts up to 70 km/h (Bft 8). On the islands at night the gusts temporarily subside, on Sunday afternoon they again intensify on the islands and in the immediate coastal zone and only in isolated cases inland.
