The former national team player worked at the club from 2009 to 2011. FC Bayern worked closely with Van Gaal. During this time, the duo won the German Championship, German Cup and DFL Super Cup. The Dutchman also led Munich to the Champions League final.
Louis van Gaal (74) will be Bastian Schweinsteiger’s first alternative to Jurgen Klopp as national coach.
Schweinsteiger has Van Gaal’s experience and his ability to rebuild teams in his favor. “He has already proven to the Dutch that he has always brought them far. If Jurgen Klopp didn’t do this, he would be at the top with me.”

Van Gaal looks back on an impressive coaching career. In addition to his stints at Ajax Amsterdam, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, he was absent twice as coach of the Dutch national team.
At the 2014 World Cup he led Elftal to the semi-finals. It all ended in a penalty shootout against Argentina. The Dutch also suffered a setback at the 2022 World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout against eventual world champions Argentina – this time in the quarter-finals.
