A motorist found his car crushed by a tree on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in Herlisheim, northeast of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). Judging by the traces found, a beaver gnawed through the trunk at night. “Flat-tailed criminal,” as he was nicknamed on social networks in the municipality.

“On the night from Monday to Tuesday, a European beaver was rampaging along the Kleinbach (creek, editor’s note),” the mayor’s office wrote in a Facebook post. It gnawed through a tree trunk and fell on a parked car. When questioned by Actu Strasbourg, the mayor of the city, Serge Schaeffer, clarified that “the trunk had jagged marks in the form of dots on each side,” indicating that the culprit was indeed a rodent of this species.

Not a single beaver dared to come so close.

According to him, no beaver had ever dared to come so close to the urban life of his city. To prevent the incident from happening again, fences will be installed at the base of trees planted near parking spaces. However, the mayor recalled the important role of beavers in creating wetlands that are very important for biodiversity.
