Elliot Page walked the red carpet at the film’s premiere in New York. Odyssey earlier this week – much to the chagrin of right-wing transphobes sitting at home at their keyboards. It’s no surprise that Page had a seemingly lovely evening with his girlfriend. overcompensation star Julia Shiplett and a team of friends including actress Peppermint, comedian James Tom and ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio. A popular movie, a beautiful partner and a fun time with friends? Looks fun.
However, as you’d expect, some people online started going completely crazy over clips of him in the film that were subsequently leaked online. Without spoiling Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, the leaked clips show scenes of Page’s character, Sinon, getting dehydrated and clambering on the beach, which appears to excite conservative transphobes. Many people have complained that Page looks weak and doesn’t look like Achilles at all – and that’s probably a good thing, because Page Not generally playing a mythological Greek warrior.
“How the hell did they hurt Achilles so what?” — wrote one of the commentators.
The controversy first began in May when it was rumored that Page would play Achilles in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of the Greek epic. Noted transphobes such as Elon Musk took issue with the casting, as did Newsmax host Rob Finnerty, who called Achilles “the most famous warrior in all of history” while criticizing Page. Keep in mind Homer Odyssey – a work of art, and Achilles – a character from Greek mythology – emphasis on myth. There’s no such thing as “historical accuracy” when you’re essentially adapting an illustrious fable.
In late June, it was confirmed that Page would actually be playing Sinon, another Greek mythology figure featured in the book of Virgil. Aeneid like a cunning deceiver who convinces the Trojan army to let in a wooden horse with Greek soldiers inside. Remember how actors do this and it’s called acting? If you take away from 10 seconds of leaked footage that Page appears weak, that means he’s probably doing his job. We’re pretty sure a guy with eight-pack abs could run around in armor if he wanted to.
However, transphobes aren’t exactly great at analyzing facts, so no matter how “accurately” Page portrays Sinon, some online commenters will never be happy.
“How ANYONE could pay to watch this is beyond me,” one wrote.
No matter how confused conservatives are about the difference between Achilles and Sinon, or the difference between myth and history for that matter, we’ll avoid their spoilers and attend the movie ourselves to watch Page kill it in the most anticipated release of the year.
