Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is campaigning in the Rio Grande Valley for the seat currently held by Sen. John Cornyn.
Cornyn lost his bid for re-election in the Republican primary. Talarico will face Republican Ken Paxton in the November election. Whoever wins will take office in January next year.
Talarico’s visit included a stop at the Tortilleria factory in McAllen. During his time in the Valley, he focused on affordable health care and immigration reform.
During a stop in Edinburgh, Talarico met with Cynthia “Cindy” Banda, a McAllen woman diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.
To pay for her treatment, Banda’s family has set up a GoFundMe page and is selling chicken plates.
“She has insurance, but it’s still not enough, and so she, like many Texans, is struggling to pay these bills,” Talarico said. “We need policy reform. We need systemic reform so we don’t have to rely so much on selling plates. People like Cindy should be able to afford the health care they need. But that doesn’t happen in this country. And that’s what we’re trying to fix.”
Paxton visited the Valley on Tuesday.
