England v Argentina, Atlanta Stadium, Wednesday, 20:00 BST.

What to pay attention to: It will be England’s second World Cup semi-final since 2018, but defending champions Argentina stand in the way of the Three Lions reaching their first finals in 60 years.

It is a match of passion and rivalry, coming 40 years after Diego Maradona almost single-handedly eliminated England in the quarter-finals in Mexico.

This time around, Argentina have another superstar in their ranks at No. 10. Lionel Messi has never faced England, and what bigger stage would be the first time to do so than in a World Cup semi-final.

Messi, who is the tournament’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, has eight goals, the same number as Mbappe, who leads the Golden Boot race for assists.

But England have their signature top ten in Jude Bellingham, who has scored twice in each of their last two knockout games – the first player to achieve that feat since Maradona in 1986 – while captain Harry Kane has matched his team-mate with six goals this summer.

None of the countries at this World Cup have reached the peak of their free agency yet, having fought and won in the knockout stages to reach this point.

It will come as no surprise that Wednesday’s meeting will also turn into a passionate battle of wills, even if Thomas Tuchel has demanded his side show more quality than in the quarter-final win over Norway.

Key Statistics: Since 2018, England have reached the semi-finals in four major tournaments, the same number they reached in their entire history before the 2018 World Cup.

The Three Lions have won four World Cup matches in a row, their longest winning streak in a single championship since 1966.

Tuchel is only the second England manager to go unbeaten in his first six World Cup games. The previous one was Alf Ramsey in 1966, who had exactly the same record after six matches (won five, drew one).

Argentina reached the final four of the World Cup for the third time in the last four editions – 2014, 2022, 2026. Before 2014, they had not reached the semi-finals since 1990.
