US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was among those who demanded a review of the decision.

Asked about the U.S. performance at the World Cup during a press conference, Rubio said, “It was great. They got screwed with that red card.”

“To do this, you need to file an appeal. It’s probably too late.”

Balogun was a key figure for Team USA at the World Cup, scoring twice for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they opened their campaign with a 4-1 win over Paraguay.

The former Arsenal striker also opened the scoring against Bosnia but was sent off in the 64th minute after a fight with Muharemovic over the ball.

As Balogun tried to defend the ball, Muharemovic managed to get in front of him, and when the striker’s boot returned to the ground, it landed on the back of the Bosnian’s ankle, causing it to twist.

Brazilian referee Rafael Claus waved a red card after being sent to a pitchside monitor to watch a video assistant referee (VAR) super slow-motion replay of the incident.

According to FIFA rules, a red card “automatically results in a suspension for the next match” but the governing body “may impose further match suspensions and other disciplinary measures.”

In the group stage of the tournament, Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo had his one-match ban increased to five for a foul on Canada’s Ismael Kon, who was left with a broken leg.

But recently a precedent emerged when FIFA suspended the disqualification of the World Cup.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been cleared to play for his country in his first match of the tournament despite a red card against Ireland during a World Cup qualifier.

The 41-year-old was sent off for elbowing Dara O’Shea in the back during Portugal’s 2-0 qualifying defeat in November and was initially given a three-match ban.

But after missing the game against Armenia, FIFA suspended the remainder of his one-year ban on November 25, allowing Ronaldo to play in Portugal’s first two World Cup matches.
