Germany had a record weekend. The warmest temperature ever, the warmest night since weather records were set – all previous highs were broken this weekend. Extreme weather conditions caused numerous disruptions: the Hype festival in Cologne was cancelled.

Heat-related road damage, known as “blasts”, left several motorways impassable, including the A 93 near Weiden. And in Leipzig and Nuremberg, trams remained temporarily in depots because the heat had left the road surface so soft that safe operation was impossible, local transport companies said.

And in Munich? The Bavarian capital has survived the recent heat wave relatively unscathed. This is despite the fact that in addition to Christopher Street Day, there were many other major events taking place over the weekend, including the Munich March in the Olympic Park and two concerts by the Canadian superstar. Weekend at the Fretmaninger Arena. Visitors everywhere were sweating profusely, but police and rescue workers had not reported much of an increase in heat-related operations until Sunday afternoon. A police spokesman explained that everything was within normal limits.

Traffic on the streets and railways also proceeded as usual. Unlike other parts of the republic, there were no reports of damage to roads in and around Munich that could be related to the heat. The Munich Transport Company (MVG) also reported no weather-related restrictions. Unlike, for example, Nuremberg, trams in Munich were able to operate on the state capital’s railway network as planned.

One reason for this was probably the temperatures, which sometimes exceeded 35 degrees. On Sunday, the German Weather Service (DWD) diagnosed “extreme heat stress” in parts of southern Bavaria due to Hoch-Hartmut. However, temperatures in Munich were always several degrees lower than the maximum values โ€‹โ€‹measured in other regions of Germany.

DWD expects colder temperatures in the coming days and is warning of severe thunderstorms. Highs in Munich could fall below 30 degrees again on Monday. On Wednesday it will be about 25 degrees. And the tropical nights are also coming to an end: overnight temperatures could drop to 15 degrees by midweek.
