The District of Columbia will see closures and modified hours this weekend as the country celebrates the 250th anniversary of independence on the Fourth of July.

There will be plenty of closures and altered schedules in the District of Columbia this weekend as the country celebrates the 250th anniversary of independence on the Fourth of July.

Public transport

Subway rides will be free throughout the system from 5:00 pm to 2:00 am on Saturday. Parking in Metro garages will also be free on Friday.

From July 4, the metro bus will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Scheduled MetroAccess rides will be cancelled, but customers can schedule a ride for Independence Day by calling 301-562-5360.

Penn Line MARC trains will operate on a reduced schedule Friday.

And on Saturday, the Penn Line will offer typical Saturday service. It will not operate trains on the Camden or Brunswick lines.

The VRE train will operate on schedule S on Friday. The VRE is offering transportation to riders hoping to watch the fireworks display on the National Mall on Saturday night. The last VRE train will leave Union Station a half-hour after the fireworks show ends.

DC

Many government offices are closed on Friday in honor of Independence Day. Public libraries are closed on Friday and Saturday.

Department of Motor Vehicles locations will be closed Friday and Saturday.

Garbage and recyclables that are typically collected on Friday will be collected on Saturday.

Outdoor swimming pools and play parks are open from 10:00 to 18:00 on Friday and Saturday.

The District of Columbia does not charge for parking on the Fourth of July.

Maryland

Government offices and public libraries are closed throughout Maryland.

Vehicle control centers are closed on Friday and Saturday.

Liquor service will remain open during regular hours on Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Montgomery County

The MC311 non-emergency government service line will not be available on Friday.

County trash and recyclables will be collected Friday. The Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center is open Friday but closed Saturday.

Ride On buses will operate on a Saturday schedule.

The Silver Spring TRiPS Commuter Store and Mobile Commuter Store will be closed.

Parking is free on Saturdays in county-owned lots, garages and metered parking lots.

Outdoor swimming pools will be open from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00.

Some Montgomery Parks facilities will be closed Friday and Saturday. Visit the department’s website to see which locations are open.

Prince George’s County

Garbage and recyclables collection will continue as normal on the Fourth of July. The same applies to the removal of bulky waste.

Museums, swimming pools, sports facilities and parks will remain open Saturday, according to the county Parks and Recreation Department.

But the parks department is closing some of its facilities – the community center, arts centers and senior activity centers will not be open on the Fourth of July.

Anne Arundel County

Garbage collection will continue on Friday and Saturday. The landfill will be closed both days.

The Arundel Olympic Swimming Center and North Arundel Aquatic Center are closed Friday.

Charles County

Curbside trash and yard waste will be collected Friday. The landfill, Piney Church mulch plant and recycling centers will be closed Saturday.

VanGO services will not operate on Friday.

The district will observe Independence Day on Friday and will close Department of Parks and Tourism offices, school community centers, Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center, Port Tobacco Recreation Center and Waldorf Senior Recreation Center.

County pools will be open for the holidays.

Howard County

Curbside trash, recyclables, food scraps and yard trimmings will be picked up on Friday. And Ellicott City residents who pick up trash on Saturdays will pick up trash on the Fourth of July.

Some community centers are closed, but all parks are open.

Frederick County

Garbage that is usually picked up on Friday will be picked up on Monday.

Transit services will operate on a holiday schedule on Friday and will be closed on Saturday.

Virginia

Many government offices, public libraries and all Department of Motor Vehicles offices in Virginia are closed Friday in observance of Independence Day.

Alexandria

On Friday, DASH buses will operate on a Saturday-Sunday schedule. Lines 102, 103 and 104 will not work.

The free King Street Trolley runs from King Street Subway to City Hall/Market Square every 15 minutes, from 11:00 to 23:00 every day, including holidays.

Memorial Pool, Old Town Pool and Warwick Pool will be open from 10am to 4:45pm on Friday. The Charles Houston (901 Wythe St.) and Patrick Henry (4653 Taney Ave.) Recreation Centers will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will serve as cooling centers. All other recreational facilities and nature centers in the City of Alexandria will be closed Friday.

On Saturday, Memorial Pool, Old Town Pool and Warwick Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The Minnie Howard Aquatics Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Charles Houston (901 Wythe St.) and Patrick Henry (4653 Taney Ave.) Recreation Centers will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. as cooling centers. Libraries will be closed on Friday and Saturday.

There will be no delays for residential waste, recycling, yard waste and curbside food waste collection on Independence Day.

The Household Hazardous Waste Electronic Collection Center will be closed on Saturday. The center is always closed on Fridays.

City offices will be closed.

Alexandria Police will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions in metered spaces and in residential permit parking zones in legal parking spaces. Temporary signs prohibiting parking will be installed.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be closed. In the event of an emergency involving an animal, residents can call 703-746-4444.

Arlington

Arlington courts and judicial services will be closed Friday.

Department of Motor Vehicles offices and libraries will also remain closed.

Community centers, with the exception of the Long Bridge Aquatic and Fitness Center, will be closed. LBAFC will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

A parking permit is always valid unless otherwise noted. Counters will not be installed.

ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55 and 87 will operate on a Sunday schedule. All other ART routes will not operate.

The Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Recycling Center and Earth Products Recycling Site are closed until Monday, July 6th.

Loudoun County

The Loudoun County Landfill will be closed on the Fourth of July.

Loudoun County Transit will not operate commuter buses to the District of Columbia, Arlington County and the Pentagon on Friday. There is no shuttle service to the Loudoun County Courthouse from the Pennington Garage and courthouse lot.

All other buses will operate as usual on Friday.

All Loudoun County bus service will be canceled on Saturday for the Fourth of July.

Fairfax County

During the holidays, trash and recyclables will be collected as usual.

The recycling and recycling centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill will be closed.

On Friday, the Fairfax Connector will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Many county recreation centers will be open Friday and Saturday. Detailed hours of operation can be found on the county website.

Prince William County

The county landfill and compost facility are closed Saturday.

Public pools will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Splashdown and Waterworks water parks will be open.

OmniRide is offering free rides on the Pentagon subway on the 4th of July for fireworks spectators. Buses will depart from Stonebridge Garage in Woodbridge and the university parking lot in Gainesville. Riders wishing to take advantage of the offer must register online in advance.
