Weekend Streaming Guide: New Shows, Movies & What’s Worth Watching Now
Post updated 09.13.26 – see updates below.
A packed weekend of streaming arrivals awaits, with new seasons of beloved series, ambitious animated comedies, true-crime documentaries, and theatrical releases hitting screens both big and small. From superhero adventures to spy thrillers and comfort-food sitcoms, there’s something for every taste across Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount+, and more. Here’s your complete guide to what’s new and what’s worth your time.
New TV Shows to Watch This Weekend
The Paper – Season 2 (Peacock)
The Office mockumentary spinoff returns to the struggling Toledo Truth Teller, where idealistic editor Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) and reporter Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei) juggle journalism and their growing relationship. Sabrina Impacciatore returns as Esmeralda Grand, with Oscar Nuñez reprising his Office role. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, with original Office creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant among the executive producers. Season 2 debuted September 9 with all 10 episodes at once, currently sitting at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics were mildly upbeat about Season 1; I watched it twice and enjoyed it greatly. Season 2 feels familiar but pleasant — a solid watch for Office fans.
DANG! (Netflix)
Andrew Law and Poppy Liu star as twenty-somethings whose lives are upended when Andrew’s older sister Ruthie (Stephanie Hsu) blows up her perfect life and moves back in. From the creator whose credits include The Good Place and Hacks, with Hsu earning an Oscar nomination for Everything Everywhere All at Once. All eight episodes premiered September 8. Currently 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite an unfortunate title, the writing pedigree is strong.
Colin From Accounts – Season 3 (Paramount+)
The Australian romantic comedy returns for its third and final season, with Ashley (Harriet Dyer) and Gordon (Patrick Brammall) picking up after another relationship breakdown — until circumstance, shared history, and Colin the dog pull them back together. Brammall and Dyer created, write, and star in the series. All eight episodes including the finale arrived September 10. Currently 100% RT. One of the most beloved shows people have been recommending to me for years.
New Movies to Watch This Weekend
Supergirl (HBO Max)
Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El in the second feature of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Kara is pulled into an interstellar quest after Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts) targets young Ruthye Marye Knoll. Jason Momoa makes his DCU debut as Lobo, with David Corenswet as Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie, based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Began streaming September 10. Currently 53% RT / 72% audience score. The film was a theatrical bomb, and Gunn’s DCU is off to a rocky start.
Kraven the Hunter (Disney+)
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Sergei Kravinoff, whose brutal relationship with father Nikolai (Russell Crowe) transforms him into the Spider-Man villain. Directed by J.C. Chandor, R-rated, arriving on Disney+ September 13. 15% critics / 72% audience score on RT. One of the final films in Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe.
Suzume (Hulu)
Makoto Shinkai’s gorgeous 2022 anime fantasy follows 17-year-old Suzume as she encounters a mysterious young man searching for an abandoned door that unleashes supernatural forces across Japan. New to Hulu September 12, subbed and dubbed. 96% RT / 98% audience — easily the best-reviewed title this weekend.
In Theaters This Weekend
Hope
South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin returns with a massive sci-fi creature feature. When a mysterious beast attacks Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min), a policewoman, and hunters attempt to kill it — only to discover something far stranger. Cast includes Jo In-sung, Squid Game‘s Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander. Opened September 9, 80% RT. Trailers look intensely bonkers despite reportedly rough CGI.
Practical Magic 2
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens nearly three decades after the original. Sally’s daughter Kylie (Joey King) falls in love as the family curse threatens a new generation. Maisie Williams, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, and Lee Pace round out the cast. Opened September 10 — surprisingly, just 35% RT despite director Susanne Bier (Bird Box) and adaptation from Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic.
TV Shows Currently Streaming Weekly
Reacher – Season 4 (Prime Video)
Adapts Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow. Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is pulled into a Pentagon conspiracy and international terror cell after a death on a Philadelphia subway. Three episodes dropped August 12, weekly through September 16 finale. The spinoff Neagley drops same day. Season 1 remains the gold standard; Season 3 was solid; this season has been disappointing, and I’m not confident in a satisfying conclusion.
Lanterns – Season 1 (HBO Max)
DC’s True Detective-style Green Lantern series follows John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) investigating a Nebraska murder across two timelines. Kelly Macdonald, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Laura Linney, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Sundays through October 4 finale. So far it’s mediocre rather than bad — Kyle Chandler is a standout, but writing and pacing are uneven.
Ted Lasso – Season 4 (Apple TV+)
Ted Lasso returns to coach a second-division women’s football team in this reboot. Jack Burditt takes over as showrunner. New episodes Wednesdays (Tuesday evenings). Ten episodes through October 7. The original fish-out-of-water magic was perfect for Season 1, but the series ran out of steam by Season 2. Mixed reports on Season 4 — let me know if you think it’s worth it.
Bonus Recommendation: Jane The Virgin (Pluto TV)
I just finished the first season of Jane The Virgin (now free on Pluto TV, purchased on Prime Video) and it was excellent. Gina Rodriguez plays Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a devout Catholic aspiring writer accidentally artificially inseminated while still a virgin. Hilarious, cleverly written, great cast, a wonderful telenovela parody. 22 episodes in Season 1 — took me and my daughter a while, but so worthwhile. One of the greatest narrators in TV history. Now my favorite Miami-set comfort food alongside Dexter.
Final Thoughts
This is a remarkably strong weekend for streaming, with standout newcomers like DANG!, Colin From Accounts, and Suzume leading the pack, plus solid returns for established favorites. My personal picks: start Colin From Accounts Season 3 (you owe it to yourself), catch Suzume for genuinely beautiful animation, and if you need comfort TV, Jane The Virgin is waiting for free on Pluto TV. As always, availability shifts — double-check your region before committing. Let me know what you’re watching on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook.
