Tom Holland tried to help Jon Bernthal during their first film together. It didn’t go very well.
On Thursday’s “Hot Ones” to promote Spider-Man: New Day and Odyssey, Holland was asked about working with Bernthal for the first time since 2017’s Pilgrimage. In the film, the pair played best friends, and Bernthal’s character was mute, so he decided not to speak after filming began. He wanted to turn to Holland for help in his attempt to go by the method, but things quickly fizzled out.
“I was his best friend in the film. And about three or four weeks before we started filming, we became good friends,” Holland explained. “We were hanging out and all of a sudden he was like, ‘Listen, dog. I’ll have to do this. I won’t talk. I will take full action. I won’t do this. I’ll need your help. I’ll have to lean on your shoulder.” I was like, “Oh yeah, whatever, man.” Like, if this is what you want to do, then this is what you want to do.”
He continued: “And then there was no sound from him for about two weeks. And we all know Jon Bernthal. We all love Jon Bernthal. My man loves to talk. So we’re sitting in restaurants and he’s writing down his food, and these are regular restaurants in Ireland, and I have to say, “I’m sorry for my friend. He’s just a pretentious actor.”
As Holland and Bernthal continued to go to restaurants, recording orders eventually became a problem. The misunderstanding between what he wanted and what the waitress brought him caused Bernthal to break down and stop his silent treatment method.
“We were at a restaurant one day and he had salmon and he wrote, ‘Can you please ask for some lemon for my salmon,’” Holland finished. “So I said to the lady, ‘Excuse me, can I have some lemon for his salmon?’ And maybe she misheard me or something. She came and brought this lemon and threw it into his drink, into his water. Then he immediately said, “Okay, screw it.” I’m talking again.”
The two’s “Hot Ones” interview was as chaotic as expected. They argued about whether the UK or America had a wider range of accents, and then Holland ended the show by vomiting during their goodbyes after being rudely hit with pointy wings throughout the episode.
The two star in Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, which is in theaters now, and Spider-Man: New Day, which hits theaters July 31.
