How to play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess the hidden five-letter word in six tries or less. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the right place.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong place.
  • Grey: There are no letters in the word at all.

Use these tips to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordle users also play competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot, or even me, your humble narrator. See Wordle competition rules at the end of this post.

Wordle Bot Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score using Wordle Bot right here.

STALE was not a good guess and no better than SLATE Wordle Bot. There were 202 words left and I just felt deep inside that the yellow letter “A” belonged in the first square. Turns out it was in two boxes, but ADORN was the perfect second guess, leaving me with only one: AVIAN for the win!

Competition score according to words

A rare victory for me this month. I get 1 point for guessing out of 3 and another for beating the bot. The bot gets 0 for guessing out of four and -1 for losing to me, which only slightly narrows our July results:

Eric: 2 points

Wordle-bot: 11 points

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • A guess of 1 is worth 3 points; guessing 2 is worth 2 points; guessing out of 3 is worth 1 point; guessing 4 is scored 0 points; guess by 5 – -1 point; guessing 6 is -2 points, and missing a word is -3 points.
  • If you defeat your opponent, you will receive 1 point. If you tie the score, you will receive 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you will receive -1 point. Add this to get your result. Keep a daily running score or just play to get a new score every day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running count or just play day by day. Enjoy!
