British Columbia Highway Patrol (BCHP) officers discovered that although the speeding driver was not stopped during the roadside intervention, the ongoing investigation did catch the rider.
BCHP officers from Cranbrook were on patrol near Fairmont Hot Springs when they said they saw an Audi sedan traveling 230 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, police said.
BCHP says they were unable to stop the Audi because it was traveling too fast.
Despite failing to stop the vehicle at first glance, BCHP says they continued to investigate.
According to police, witnesses told BCHP officers that a vehicle drove into a campground.
Police say they found the Audi, which was parked and empty.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, BCHP said they found the driver who they suspected was intoxicated.
Officers took a breath sample from the driver, who read “WARNING,” BCHP said.
A 20-year-old Alberta man was immediately banned from driving on the roads for three days.
He also received:
- Fine for speeding.
- Penalty for driving without a driver’s license.
- Detention of the vehicle for seven days.
- Fines totaling $959 under the Motor Vehicle Act
- Referral to the Alberta administrative authority that reviews driving sanctions for drivers in that province.
“Not every investigation ends with flashing lights and a traffic stop,” said Sgt. Brett Reiben, BCHP Cranbrook unit commander.
“This is an excellent example of persistent police work and good information from the public that resulted in a driver being brought to justice for dangerous driving behavior.”
