Ghosts of past marriages seem to be haunting Jennifer Garner’s current relationship with businessman John Miller. The actor has been dating Miller since 2018. After a short break between them in 2020, the couple seemed strong until recently. There seems to be a Ben Affleck-shaped wedge driven between them.
Miller reportedly felt more like a third wheel than Garner’s partner due to Affleck’s very visible dependence on his ex. Affleck and Garner were once one of Hollywood’s favorite it-couples. During their 10 years of marriage, the couple had three children, creating a lifelong bond through co-parenting after their divorce. However, Affleck’s struggle with addiction kept Garner by his side even after their split.
In 2018, Garner organized an intervention for Affleck, which led to another exoneration for the Justice League actor. “What Jen is ultimately concerned about is his sobriety and whether she can rely on him as a co-parent,” a source told Radar at the time. Garner also reportedly played a “mediator” (via the Daily Mail) for Jennifer Lopez and Affleck during their 2025 divorce. A source told Radar that Miller simply “wants Jen for himself… He’s trying to work through Ben and Jen’s relationship by mostly remaining silent, but it’s very difficult to do.”
Ben and Jen’s journey through marriage, rehab and divorce may prove to be too much of a bond for John to handle.

Ben Affleck’s apparent dependence on Jennifer Garner didn’t come as a complete surprise after he called the divorce “the biggest regret of my life” in a 2020 interview with the New York Times. Affleck described his many highly publicized trips to rehab as “embarrassing. I wish this didn’t happen. I really wish my kids didn’t see this on the internet. “Jen and I did our best to address this issue and be honest.” Garner’s devotion to her ex-husband doesn’t come without praise. Affleck praised Garner during the Kiss of the Spider Woman premiere, saying, “I’m very lucky that I have a great partner and that we have great kids. This is the joy of my life and I’m just very, very lucky. And it makes me happy every day” (via People).
In an interview with GQ in 2025, Affleck explained that he had been sober for “more than five years.” However, given his history of addiction, it makes sense why Garner would keep a close eye on him. Despite John Miller’s growing impatience with the drama, he and Affleck seemed to be on good terms a few years ago. In 2023, they were even photographed chatting together. A source told Entertainment Tonight: “Ben is very supportive of Jennifer’s relationship and just wants her to be happy. It’s important for Ben to have a strong relationship with John.” Let’s hope Affleck and Garner’s blended family can continue to thrive given Miller’s complaints.
