Spain made a brilliant start and thought they had taken the lead after half an hour when Real Madrid’s Mark Cucurella fired home after the ball fell into his path following a corner. However, the goal was quickly overturned by referee Glenn Nyberg, who ruled that Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager had been fouled seconds before Cucurella’s shot hit the back of the net.
“The whistle is gone,” Steve Bauer told the BBC. “Spain is furious, but the Swedish official immediately blew the whistle.”
Danny Murphy was next to Bauer and added: “I don’t see anything on the goalkeeper. There’s a man in front of him, but he’s not fouling.”
“I don’t think it should be banned, I really don’t think so. There’s nothing wrong with it at all.”
The goal was compared to the incident in which Jonathan Tach’s Germany cap was ruled out in the defeat to Paraguay.
Former Premier League referee Darren Cann thought the decision was wrong but could understand why it was ruled out as the Tach controversy provided an example for VAR to fall back on.
“I don’t see a foul,” Cann said. “For me, this is very similar to Tach’s header in the match against Germany, which was also banned, which, in my opinion, is wrong.
“It’s a fair challenge and I would have scored a goal, but I can understand why it was disallowed given Germany’s performance. This corresponds to judging at the beginning of the tournament.”
Jurgen Klopp suggested that Tah’s goal would not have been disallowed in the Premier League, and Cannes was of the same view.
“Of course the Premier League will give them,” Cann added.
The Spaniards were undeterred and took the lead when Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the 36th minute.
Pedro Porro scored another second-half goal before Oyarzabal completed a late brace as the 2010 World Cup winners headed to the round of 16 to face either Portugal or Croatia.
Throwing food and drinks at the TV
Former England international Joe Hart has expressed sympathy for Premier League goalkeepers in the wake of disallowed goals at the 2026 World Cup.
“Premier League goalkeepers will throw food and drinks at the TV,” Hart said. “What happened in the Premier League this season should be banned.
“It’s really soft, it’s just people fighting for the ball. Sometimes I can understand it when your hands are beaten or taken away. It’s just an innocent challenge.”
