Siya Goyal “secretly” married her boyfriend Chetan Chaudhary after her engagement to Pune-based realtor Ketan Agarwal, sources said, marking a new twist in the Pune Fort murder case.
Goyal, 20, and Agarwal, 25, have scheduled their wedding for November. But on June 18, something happened that no one expected. When Agarwal fell to his death at Lohagad Fort in Pune, the police alleged a conspiracy hatched by Goyal as she did not want to get married.
At the heart of the investigation are allegations that the Pune rural police are now investigating allegations that Goyal and her boyfriend Chaudhary got married secretly at a local registry office four months ago.
The police are checking whether a marriage certificate exists under the Special Marriage Act to confirm whether they actually got married, invalidating her February engagement to Agarwal.
Sources said two of Goyal’s college friends, who allegedly signed up as witnesses, are also under investigation.
Police technical teams are trying to recover deleted photographs from a private Instagram account that reportedly show the accused couple wearing wedding garlands.
Investigators suspect the murder plot was hatched after her would-be in-laws asked Goyal for documents for a wedding in Udaipur. Police are checking Chaudhary’s bank records to see if he paid a middleman to skip the mandatory public notice and rush into a secret marriage.
Both Goyal and Chaudhary remain in judicial custody.
Agarwal, a Pune-based businessman, met Goyal through family matchmakers and got engaged in February. A hotel was booked for a luxurious wedding in November in Udaipur.
Goyal and Chaudhary were detained by police days after Agarwal fell to his death from a cliff at Lohagad Fort on June 18. Chaudhary, they alleged, was spotted following Goyal and Agarwal to carry out the murder plan.
