Expect plenty of interesting tennis on day six of Wimbledon, with eight intriguing third-round matches on the championship schedule. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule, including Frances Tiafoe vs. Alexander Bublik, but who will live to see the next day at the All England Club?
Forecasts for the sixth day of Wimbledon
Grigor Dimitrov vs Matteo Berrettini
Tope: Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini renew their rivalry for the first time since 2019 – and this is their first meeting on grass with the score 1-1. Berrettini’s booming serve gives him the edge in the toughest moments, but Dimitrov’s skill on the grass and newfound durability make him a real threat. Expect fireworks as this sets up an outstanding third round clash.
Prediction: Dimitrov in 5
Jordan: The sets will probably be decided by a few points. Both men put in outstanding performances in the previous round and this match promises to be a classy match considering their respective styles. Berrettini has a slightly better chance of winning due to the way he served in the previous two rounds. When an Italian serves like that, it’s very difficult to stop him on the grass.
Prediction: Berrettini in match 4
Andreas: Classic Dimitrov stunned Jakub Mensik in the second round and he will have to fight another player who is returning to his best form. Both players have powerful forehands and tricky backhands, but the real difference in this matchup may be Berrettini’s hitting serve. The Italian won his last meeting on a fast court indoors. I could see this match going either way, but the Italian has a dangerous weapon on these courts.
Prediction: Berrettini in match 4
Alexander Zverev vs Marcos Giron
Top: Marcos Giron followed up his victory at Corentin Moutet with a straight-sets goal from Quentin Halis, a much cleaner story than their five-set thriller at Roland Garros in 2020. Next up: Zverev, who is riding a nine-game winning streak in Grand Slam tournaments and lost just one break point against Valentin Reuer. History is not kind here: Zverev’s head-to-head record is 4-0, 2-0 on grass, including a lopsided straight-sets win over Girona at Wimbledon two years ago, so expect the German to go forward in a straightforward fashion.
Prediction: Zverev in the 3rd match
Jordan: Girona’s best chance to upset Zverev is playing on grass. The American will try to derail the French Open title on his least favorite surface, hitting flat and low shots. I have a feeling it will be a shock.
Forecast: Chiron in 5
Andreas: Zverev’s powerful serves and weapons helped him get through the draw with ease. But he has failed at Wimbledon before. Giron loves basic plays and moves exceptionally well on fast courts, but this is too much of a step forward for the American. Expect the German to head into week two having won his fifth match in a row in this head-to-head showdown.
Prediction: Zverev in the 3rd match
Taylor Fritz vs. Lorenzo Sonego
Top: Taylor Fritz scored, 19 aces, no break point in sight, but Lorenzo Sonego’s four-hour marathon survival proves that he is made for just such ambushes on the grass. History favors the American, who is 6-2 head-to-head and scored a comeback win over Sonego on this very surface eight years ago. However, an explosive Sonego in good form is the most dangerous puzzle Fritz has ever faced in SW19. This one won’t be serene.
Forecast: Fritz in 5
Jordan: Sonego is durable on all surfaces. However, I think he will lose to Fritz. The 2024 US Open runner-up serve is hard to stop on grass, and I doubt Sonego can do it at Wimbledon.
Prediction: Fritz at 3
Andreas: This is the ninth meeting of the pair on the tour, because Fritz has four wins in a row in this match. They met at Wimbledon in 2018 and Fritz has since established himself as a grass-court specialist. Both players have strong serves and do not shy away from the goal, but the American has more weapons and can win the decisive points.
Prediction: Fritz at 4
Alex de Minaur vs Zachary Svaida
Tope: Alex de Minaur is among the last 32 players unbeaten in straight sets and he will take his chances against the pinpoint talent of Zachary Svaida. The American just survived a five-set battle with Kamil Majczak, so fatigue could be a factor after all that grass play. Expect De Minaur’s tenacity and acumen to see him through to the end, even if Svaida makes him work for it.
Prediction: De Minaur at 4
Jordan: De Minaur, with his precise shots and excellent return, is capable of Wimbledon. The Aussie’s relentless play should be enough to overcome Svaida with relative ease.
Prediction: minor out of 4
Andreas: De Minaur is yet to drop a set in this tournament and the Australian should be able to time his groundstrokes against another baseline specialist. Svadya is a durable player rising in the rankings, but he doesn’t have the powerful serve or topspin to force the Aussie into making mistakes. Expect some fun pranks in this match.
Prediction: De Minaur at 4
