Should you choose Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y?
There are a few things here that may influence your decision: your Go Fest Game TimeMewtwo potential damage And Mewtwo possible Adventure Effects. Notably, the Mewtwo you receive from this Time Research will have the first mega level is already unlocked.
Firstly, Mega Mewtwo X is only available in raids on Saturday, July 11th, while Mega Mewtwo Y is only available in raids on Sunday, July 12th.. For Mega Mewtwo X you will need Mewtwo Mega Energy X with the same name. On the other hand, for Mega Mewtwo Y you will need Mewtwo Mega Energy Y. You can really only get these by raiding this type of Mewtwo, and you need a huge amount of Mega Energy (7500!) to Mega Evolve it the first time – and even more to power it up further.
That being said, if you’re only going to play on Saturday, you can choose Mega Mewtwo Y – this way you can build up energy through raids to get your own Mega Mewtwo X, and then get a “free” Mega Mewtwo Y from research (or vice versa).

If you are looking for pure power, Mega Mewtwo Y is generally the stronger of the two, but only by a hair.. Both of them are exceptional psychic type attackers and the difference between them is practically negligible. Both types of Mega Mewtwo can be used as very strong attackers for other types, depending on their charged attack:
- Electric: Lightning strike
- Ice: Ice Beam
- Fighting: Focus Burst
- Ghost: Ball of Shadows
For these types of specs, Mega Mewtwo Y is stronger than Mega Mewtwo X, with the exception of Fighting type, where Mega Mewtwo X comes out on top as it gains Fighting type. (Notably, Mega Lucario is stronger than Mega Mewtwo X as a Fighting Type, so do with it what you will.)
So, with all this in mind, the answer is: it depends on when you plan to play more and what exactly you want. Both Mega Mewtwo are very powerful and worth having, but they have their own advantages and strengths.
According to the datamine, Mega Mewtwo was also supposed have a unique adventure effect that you can activate to get a special bonus, but Scopely Explore hasn’t officially announced this, so we’re not sure if this idea was scrapped entirely or if it’s something after Go Fest (which would be weird). Either way, you can see the effects below:
- Mega Mewtwo X with Dynamic Punch: Allows you to break two shields in Super Mega Raids within 10 minutes.
- Mega Mewtwo Y looks to the future: Reveals “high stat” Pokemon before they are caught within 5 minutes.
Most players will find Mega Mewtwo Y’s adventure effect more rewarding.but if you’re playing in a quieter zone with fewer players, being able to break two shields can make a big difference (especially if there are other people with this effect active). That said, it’s quite possible that these adventure effects will never see the light of day, so… (shrug)
