Oscar winner Penélope Cruz just gave us another soon-to-be-hit version worth adding to our list of favorites. During the press tour for her upcoming film this week Invitation In Los Angeles, the actress unveiled a new look with a lively hairstyle, which her stylist Dimitris Giannetos called the “Weekend Bob.”
“The Weekend bob is hair that feels loose and casual—like you’re keeping the glamor of the hairstyle you wore on Friday night, but with a more casual finish,” says Giannetos of her look. The stylist adds that the key to making a bob playful is enhancing its texture without adding too many layers of product. The effortless style should convey a feeling of careful yet relaxed, rather than harsh and precise.

“The ends have soft movement and a delicate texture so the hair never feels too perfect,” he says. “The shape is versatile and can be worn flat, tucked behind the ears or with natural curves and waves. The goal is movement and softness.”

To achieve this look at home, Giannetos recommends starting with a light heat protectant, then smoothly styling your hair, then creating loose curls at the ends of your hair using a flat iron or a large-barrel curling iron, like Tymo’s CurlPro Plus Automatic Rotating Curling Iron. “Don’t twist each strand the same way; the texture should not be uniform,” says the expert. Giannetos added volume and dimension to Cruz’s bob by adding Great Longs extensions. Then, once the curls are completely cool, he advises gently parting them with your fingers rather than combing them to help them maintain their shape. Finally, to lock in a textured yet tactile look, the stylist recommends finishing with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray for extra hold and finishing with a light finishing serum or shine spray on the ends.
Even if you don’t have wavy hair like Cruise, the beauty of the Weekend Bob is that it’s completely customizable and adaptable to almost any texture and face shape. “It’s especially great for those who want shorter hair but aren’t committed to a high-maintenance hairstyle,” notes Giannetos.
