A week after Fadi al-Nasan was shot dead in his West Bank village, Fadi al-Nasan’s death comes amid a surge in settler violence.

A Palestinian teenager who played for his country’s youth soccer team has died from a gunshot wound suffered during an attack by Israeli settlers on his village in the occupied West Bank, officials and his family said.
Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, 17, was shot on July 11 and died of his wounds on Saturday.

His death has drawn new attention to the escalating violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers and soldiers against Palestinian communities in the West Bank, territory Israel has occupied since 1967 and where settlement construction is expanding at an increasing rate despite it being illegal under international law.
Human rights groups and the United Nations have described Israel’s actions in the West Bank as a system of apartheid.
Al-Nassan played for the Al-Mughayir club and was a member of the Palestine youth team.
Dozens of mourners dressed in black carried his body from the Palestinian medical complex in Ramallah to his home village of al-Mughayir for burial on Saturday.
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said Israeli forces shot al-Nassan in the thigh as settlers attacked the village. His leg was later amputated and he died from his injuries, the association said.
“With the passing of Fadi, the number of martyrs of the Palestinian sports movement has risen to 1,013 martyrs since October 7, 2023, including 568 martyrs of the Palestinian football family,” the association said in a statement to X.
His father, Hamdallah al-Nassan, said his son ran to the scene after hearing women and girls screaming during the attack.
“He went to the scene of the attack and was killed,” he said.
“He was a good student, good at sports and loved to play football. Everyone loved him,” said his mother Hanan al-Nassan.
Violence in the West Bank
Separately on Saturday, Israeli settlers and forces set Palestinian property on fire in two separate attacks in the occupied West Bank, destroying olive trees near Ramallah and a family home near Nablus, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
The attacks came the same day Israeli forces raided homes in towns near Jenin, the latest example of the incursions and settler violence that Palestinian communities across the territory face almost daily.
In Deir Qaddis, west of Ramallah, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition and tear gas at Palestinian farmers working their land, setting fires that engulfed olive groves, Wafa said.
Civil defense crews were unable to reach the site, allowing the fire to spread further.
Near Nablus, a group of settlers set fire to the home of a Palestinian family in the town of Tal, completely destroying it, Wafa reported.
Israeli forces also raided houses in Yabad and Mithlon, near Jenin, in what residents say is part of an almost daily pattern of incursions and attacks by settlers.
