Cuxhaven – “After 36 hours I am still speechless,” writes a woman from Cuxhaven in a restaurant group on Facebook. She ordered a Bismarck roll from Bjorns Beach on the North Sea. When the fish sandwich lay on the plate in front of her, she could hardly believe her eyes. “I specifically asked if they had finished yet, and they confidently said yes.” In fact, she “always forgives” the food service industry “a lot.” But at this stage their understanding stops.

To illustrate the difference, a Cuxhaven woman shares a photo of a fish sandwich she bought at Björns Beach in Cuxhaven. There is quite a bit of filling: next to the roll and fish you only see onions and a little sauce.
For comparison, she also shows a photo of the Bismarck roll from the Düner Spitze restaurant. In addition to the ingredients mentioned, it is also topped with lettuce and is overall more generous. In terms of price, both fish rolls should be in the same segment, says the Cuxhaven native. Our research could not confirm this, as prices for fish sandwiches at Bjorns Beach cannot be viewed. However, the tone in the comment column is clear.

Others confirm: “The best fish sandwich” can be found at the Duhner Spitze in Cuxhaven. Some recommend small restaurants such as Randecker, kleine Fischkiste or Fischbrötchen by the drawbridge. Some restaurant patrons also share their bad experiences with fish sandwiches at Bjorns Beach. “Insolence” and “No need to go there anymore” are the main mood of the guests. At the time of publication, the Björns Beach restaurant had not commented on the guests’ allegations. And yet there are clues that explain the difference between the fish rolls in Cuxhaven: According to the German Food Code, there are legal requirements for fish and fish products such as Bismarck herring or mattier. However, there are no rules regarding what a finished fish sandwich should look like. How generously a bun is filled or what ingredients are included is largely left to the discretion of the supplier in question.
