Newcastle United are “optimistic” about signing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi and preliminary talks are currently underway, according to British journalist Ben Jacobs.
After reportedly reaching an agreement for Hoffenheim striker Bazuman Toure, Newcastle appear to be now attempting to seal a deal for the Swiss international.
The Daily Mail first linked Manzambi with a move to the Magpies four days ago.
After selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for €80 million, Newcastle are closing in on Sandro Tonali’s €117 million departure to Tottenham, leaving them with significant funds to reinvest.
However, it is unlikely that Freiburg are willing to move forward with a deal at this stage, with the 20-year-old still representing Switzerland at the World Cup and potentially attracting further interest with his performances.
Manzambi has been one of Switzerland’s standout players in the tournament so far, scoring three goals and providing one assist in three games.
