A throwback to a news story that rocked Brazil, this psychological thriller promises to leave no one unscathed.

Netflix continues to expand its catalog of thrillers inspired by current events. The recipe worked in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, July 22nd, Circle of Snows, and is still popular in Eliza: Out of the Shadows, released Wednesday, July 22nd. This fantasy, not recommended for children under 16, is behind a court case that made headlines in Brazilian media in the early 2010s. This feature film is inspired by the case of Elise Matsunaga, named after the woman who murdered her husband Marcos Matsunaga before dismembering him and attempting to make his body disappear. The story shocked the whole country and still arouses the curiosity of subscribers, who put this psychological thriller in second place in the Top 10, right behind the sulfurous “Desire.”

An enjoyable psychological thriller

Flixpatrol data even reports that Red N addicts from eight territories have made this disturbing film their favorite of the moment, including Brazil, obviously, but also Hungary or the overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Martinique). Elise: Out of the Shadows is not a documentary: director Felipe Vellas has taken a fictional look at this true crime, keeping the basic elements but adding a more romantic dimension and elaborate staging. “I wanted it to have an impact even if the viewer knew nothing about the case, even if it was seen abroad. I wanted them to enjoy watching a psychological thriller.”– explained to TELA VIVA the director, who likes to use freeze frames to enhance the sense of tension.

What heinous crime is “Eliza” based on?

Actress Lorena Comparato has been cast as Elise Mastunaga, who is quickly suspected of murdering her husband, the CEO of the Brazilian empire Yoki. Convinced that he was cheating on her, she hired a private detective to keep an eye on him. This is how the young mother found out that her companion was having an extramarital affair with a call girl named Natalya. Following the discovery, a violent argument broke out in the couple’s São Paulo apartment. The businessman allegedly threatened his wife to reveal her past as a call girl in order to gain sole custody of their one-year-old daughter. The deceived woman then allegedly shot her husband in the head and then cut up his body before putting each piece in plastic bags and placing them in three suitcases. They will be found in a few days. After weeks of denial, she finally confessed to the crime and was sentenced to 19 years and 11 months in prison.
