Javier Aguirre’s side came into this game on the back of a perfect group stage, becoming only the sixth team in World Cup history to finish the group stage with three wins and three clean sheets.
Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in their World Cup opener before being edged out by South Korea in a 1-0 win before they edged past the Czech Republic 3-0 to take top spot in Group A.
The hosts are in stellar form having won their last six matches in a row and are also on an 11-match unbeaten run.
Unlike Mexico, Ecuador could not make it difficult to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
They started their World Cup with a late 0-1 defeat to Ivory Coast before seriously putting their qualification in jeopardy with a 0-0 draw with the Curacao minnows. However, Gonzalo Plata’s strike saw them come back late against Germany (2-1) and go out as one of the top eight third-place finishers.
The winner of this competition will set up a mouth-watering round of 16 clash against either England or DR Congo.
