If Zach Merrett were to leave Essendon (and that seems certain), what would the ideal trade package look like from a Bombers perspective?
That’s the question I’m asking myself as an Essendon supporter, especially after reading Aidan Cellini’s article on Zero Hanger last week.
It’s impossible to replace a player of Merrett’s caliber. You won’t find another six-time Crichton medalist and one of the competition’s elite midfielders overnight. The reality is that Essendon will have to use any deal to satisfy multiple list needs while setting itself up for the future.
The bombers’ most glaring problems are well documented. They desperately need another key defender, more pressure on their small forwards and class at the first level, while a long-term solution also remains a priority.
With that in mind, it is these trade packages that will make the most sense for Essendon from each of the four clubs most closely linked to Merrett.
Package 1: Hawthorn
Essendon receives: Jack Scrimshaw, Hawthorn first round pick 2026 (currently pick 16), Hawthorn second round pick 2026 (currently pick 27)
Hawthorne receives: Zach Merrett
This is probably the best option for both clubs. With Jordan Ridley heavily linked to Queensland, the Bombers are at risk of losing their top defender to the interception. Jack Scrimshaw immediately helped soften the blow by bringing versatility, strength in the air and excellent ball control to the midfielder.

Including selection in both the first and second rounds may seem ambitious, but Essendon have every incentive to make a hard bargain.
The Bombers have already shown in previous trade periods that they will not accept an offer simply because a player wants to leave. With several clubs interested in Merrett, Hawthorn will likely have to pay more to land one of the league’s elite midfielders.
If Hawthorn really wants Merrett, this is the type of offer that would make Essendon seriously consider him.
