Matt Damon feels the physical effects of decades of demanding roles after filming Christopher Nolanupcoming epic Odysseysource exclusively reports Globe.

“This has been the case throughout Matt’s career, where there is virtually no limit to the physical punishment and stress he will endure in a film in which he is one of the main characters,” says the source. “He put himself through hell time and time again, from all the fights he did in the Bourne films to the extremes of losing and gaining weight he had to go through on projects like Courage under fire or Informant

The source adds that it’s a “constant challenge” for Damon, 55, but he “doesn’t know any other way to approach this job.”

During a speech at Amy Poehler‘s Good hang In a podcast on Monday, July 6, the Oscar winner revealed that “to have fun at 50” requires a “complete lifestyle change.”

And, according to the source, Odyssey turned out to be especially painful for him.

The source says Damon still approaches physically demanding roles with the same intensity as he did decades ago, even though it’s taking longer to recover now that he’s older.

“If the movie works, great, but Matt is no longer 25 and it has taken him months to recover from the physical toll that filming took on him,” the source continues, adding that Damon’s wife, Luciana Barrososupports his career, she hopes he will become more aware of the physical demands of future projects.

“Lucy understands this. She’s by his side on this journey, but of course she’d like him to take his physical well-being into account when saying yes to a big movie where he’s going to get his ass kicked almost every single day,” the source shares.

However, the source reports that Good Will Hunting the star embraced aging naturally and took inspiration from her longtime friend, George Clooney.

“He doesn’t hide the fact that he’s getting old,” says the source. “He doesn’t dye his hair or put fillers on his face. But he still takes on roles that are as physically challenging as they come, and approaches these gigs as if he still has something to prove, even after all these years.”

Damon has earned a reputation for performing intense scenes throughout his career, most notably as Jason Bourne in Born franchise. His latest project Odysseyfeatures an all-star cast that includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson And Charlize Theron.

It hits theaters July 17.
