Summing up the 32nd round
Canada advances to the round of 16 for the first time as the team continues to make history with its first appearance in the FIFA World Cup playoffs.
Reds Dramatically secured a place in the round of 16 by defeating South Africa 1-0 in the round of 16. Midfielder Steven Eustaquio scored the winner in stoppage time for Canada to secure the historic result. Inter Miami goalkeeper St. Clair was on the bench but did not participate in the match.
Before the win over South Africa, Canada opened the tournament with a memorable campaign in Group B, where the hosts finished in second place with four points and a 1-1-1 record. Canada posted a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening match, securing the team’s first World Cup point, followed by a convincing 6-0 win for Qatar for a historic first win.
Meanwhile, Morocco started the World Cup finishing second in Group C with seven points after two wins and a draw. The African nation then defeated the Netherlands 3–2 on penalties in the round of 16 after the match finished 1–1.
St. Clair with Canada
St. Clair was named to Canada’s World Cup squad for the second time in a row after also being on Team Canada’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.
The goalkeeper made his senior debut for his country in a Concacaf World Cup qualifier in June 2021, playing the full 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet in a 7-0 win over Aruba. Since then he has played 20 matches for the national team. Redsincluding appearances at the 2024 Copa America, two Concacaf Gold Cup tournaments and the 2024–25 Concacaf Nations League.
