It was a serving masterclass on Court 16, with the 6ft 5in Briton hitting 18 aces in less than two hours.
“I’m very happy to play in this great tournament,” said the world number 100. “I’m very glad that I received a lot of support this week, especially my coach, my family, my girlfriend who is always with me. All the guys from LTA as well.
“I just wanted to put on a good show. I think I succeeded, I served well and felt good on the court. The result speaks for itself. I approached the match with confidence, tried to play aggressive tennis. I managed to do it from start to finish very effectively.”
Court 16 was the meeting place for the British today as Choinski followed in the footsteps of compatriots Katie Swan and Arthur Fehry, who both won earlier in the day on the same court.
And although the sun began to set at a particularly awkward angle over the All England Club, the 30-year-old found a way to survive the most important moments.
“Everything was fine for most of the match,” said Choinski, who trains at the National Tennis Center in Roehampton. “The atmosphere on the court was amazing. The crowd was great and my box was amazing.
“At one point the sun had not yet set and it was literally shining in my eyes for one game. There may have been two or three games on this side, but that one game was the most important and fortunately I was able to win it.”
“Plus, it was great conditions.”
Choinski is an experienced tour competitor, having turned professional over a decade ago in 2014 and making his ATP main draw debut two years later. Representing Germany until 2018, he changed his nationality to Great Britain in early 2019 as his mother is from Southampton.
After reaching the quarter-finals of the Lexus Eastbourne Open, where he became the first British player to qualify in the men’s singles, Choinski entered the ATP top 100 for the first time in his career.
Although he reached the second round of the All England Club in 2023, the Briton will have the opportunity to go through another one on Thursday. Either Francis Tiafoe or Terence Atmane await Choinski in the second round after their match was suspended due to poor light, with 17th seed Tiafoe winning two sets to one.
“I’m looking forward to it, no matter what the trial is,” Choinski said. “I will do my best to be ready and fresh for the match.”
