A guest at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey’s wedding is one of the first to detail the extreme security measures built into the couple’s invitation process.
Jonathan Thomas, CEO of American Century Investments, told The Compound & Friends podcast that the invitation process began earlier this year with a simple text message. In fact, he said he initially deleted it because it said, “This is from Taylor and Travis. I promise this is not spam.”
When he didn’t respond, Kelsey personally called a few months later to make sure he was invited. Thomas said Kelsey explained that the digital approach was intentional; their guests travel constantly, are rarely in one place, and coordinating physical mail would be too difficult. Kelsey told him they already had everyone’s cell phone numbers.
From there, Thomas said, the process quickly evolved into full safety protocols.
“And when you first receive a wedding invitation, which is a text message, the first thing you do is multi-factor authentication,” he began.
“So you go through this process a couple of times. Then you receive a non-disclosure agreement. Sent to you via DocuSign. Only after completing these steps do guests receive a real digital invitation, and even this has been designed to prevent leaks.”
Thomas continued: “After that, you actually received the invitation itself, a digital invitation with a watermark. So in the background it says Jonathan and Cindy Thomas (his wife). So, if you take a screenshot and share it, everyone will know who it was. I won’t go into the details of the non-disclosure agreement, but he had teeth, let’s put it that way.”
Thomas said Swift and Kelsey revealed wedding details in stages, first the date, then the city, but didn’t reveal the exact location until hours before the ceremony.
“And then throughout the whole process, so the first one just came out: You’re Invited to the Wedding, then it came out on July 3rd in New York, then it came out on July 3rd in Manhattan, and it wasn’t until 4 a.m. on the wedding day that we found out the exact location.”
Swift and Kelsey got married on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, where actor Adam Sandler served as the amazing officiant for the star-studded ceremony.
The mystery surrounding the wedding preparations dissipated when, after they tied the knot, a marquee outside the Manhattan Arena announced, “GET MARRIED ONLY.”
