Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is now available to rent or buy digitally on PVOD platforms like Prime Video. The film will arrive online almost exactly two months after its initial theatrical release on May 22.
During its theatrical run, The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed just over $344 million against a reported budget of approximately $165 million. Although it managed to break even, expectations were especially high for the first Star Wars project to hit theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Unfortunately, the move to digital cements its position as the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film to date.

The Evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords are scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion stood for, they enlist the help of the Mandalorian Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.
One of these shorts states that The Mandalorian, as a standalone series, ended in 2023, which casts doubt on the future development of the franchise. This film functionally replaced the fourth season of The Mandalorian, which we have always been fans of in its Disney+ version. It remains to be seen where the series about Pedro Pascal and baby Grogu will go next.
Most of the film’s box office problems began in its second weekend, when theater attendance dropped by more than 60%. Unfortunately, critics aren’t taking the story much better. The film currently has a 60% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, barely achieving Certified Fresh status. IGN’s own 5/10 review states that the film adds nothing noteworthy to the franchise, with Tom Jorgenson simply writing, “This is not the way to go.”
However, the film will be released on full DVD, including standard Blu-ray and 4K steelbook. They are available for pre-order and will go on sale on August 25th.
Meanwhile, there’s never a shortage of upcoming Star Wars projects under the Disney banner. The Star Wars Visions animated series, The Ninth Jedi, will be released on Disney+ next month. We also won’t have to wait long to see another live-action Star Wars movie in theaters. Star Wars: Starfighter, starring none other than Ryan Gosling, will be released in theaters next May.
When will The Mandalorian and Grogu be released on Disney+?
The Mandalorian and Grogu will eventually join the rest of the Star Wars universe on Disney+. While a Star Wars movie hasn’t actually been released in theaters since Disney+ launched in late 2019 (some fun math), Disney’s other property, good old Marvel, typically takes about 90 days to add new movies to the service.
Assuming the folks at Lucasfilm stick to a similar schedule, Disney+ subscribers can likely expect The Mandalorian and Grogu to hit streaming by early September.
