Debby Ryan Reveals Life-Altering Brain Injury
Debby Ryan, the former Disney Channel star who rose to fame on The Suite Life on Deck and later headlined Jessie, recently opened up about a “life‑altering brain injury” that occurred a few years ago. The revelation came during an appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, as reported by People.
From Disney Channel Star to Neurological Rehab
Ryan debuted as Bailey Pickett on The Suite Life on Deck in 2008, alongside Dylan and Cole Sprouse. She went on to star in the Disney Channel series Jessie from 2011 to 2015, opposite Peyton List and Cameron Boyce. The show ran for four seasons and 98 episodes, cementing her status as a teen icon.
The Ongoing Battle With Migraines
Before the brain injury, Ryan described suffering from “hellish” migraines for years, referring to herself as a “migraine warrior.” She explained that the condition made the world feel “really loud and too bright,” and that after the fifth concussion, her symptoms worsened significantly.
Life After the Brain Injury
The brain injury, which included “sustained shaking over a minute of time,” left Ryan out of commission for about six months. She underwent neurological rehabilitation for the same period, trying a “fringe science treatment” in an effort to regain function. While some abilities returned, she noted that “there are some things that just did not come back.”

Looking Ahead and Support
Ryan expressed gratitude for the support system around her, saying, “I feel really fortunate that I have an amazing team of people around me who sort of reminded me who I am and was and also held a lot of space for that to change, potentially permanently, and love me through that.” She added that she often closes her eyes to reduce visual distraction, stating, “Quite often I can see better and think better with my eyes closed.”
