Olympique Marseille’s Mason Greenwood has been Ligue 1’s most valuable player outside of PSG and the most feared professional in the entire league since his €25 million move from Manchester United in the summer of 2024. According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Greenwood is going to make the biggest transfer of his career, which will make him the most expensive football player in the history of Istanbul Fenerbahce.
Accordingly, Greenwood is due to receive €10 million at Fener plus performance bonuses – since professional contracts in Turkey are usually expressed as net salary and the tax burden is borne by the club, this is an amount he would otherwise only earn in Saudi Arabia. According to Sabuncoglu, the transfer cost is almost 50 million euros, including bonus payments. According to sports newspaper L’Equipe, he earns around 6 million euros in Marseille.
After problems off the pitch, Greenwood returned to action with Getafe in the 2023/24 season, where he scored 14 goals in 33 La Liga appearances. It recommended he move to Marseille, where he scored 21 Ligue 1 goals in his debut season and recently scored 16 times. The result – 50 points in 66 matches of the French championship – no other player was more dangerous during this time than Greenwood. That’s why he has increased his market value eightfold since 2023 and recently reached his career high of €55 million.
Only Osimhen was more expensive than Greenwood in the Super League
The fact that Manchester United let go of one of their greatest talents was due to allegations of abuse against the 24-year-old footballer. He was removed from office in January 2022 following an investigation by the British judicial system. After they were canceled a year later, the Red Devils announced their own procedure which resulted in the home-grown player no longer playing for the club.
If OM and Fener reach an agreement, Greenwood will replace Matteo Guendouzi and become the most expensive signing in the club’s history. The Frenchman moved from Lazio in the summer of 2025 for 28 million euros. Compared to the Super League, he will become the second most expensive transfer in the history of the league after Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray, for whom 75 million euros went to Naples, and also currently the second most valuable player after the Nigerian. Greenwood’s new working paper is for four years and includes the option of spending another season with the Canaries – he has a contract with Marseille until 2029.
