Scorecard
Jos Buttler scored a majestic 131 to take England to the top of the world rankings with a dominant 56-run win over India in the fifth T20 at Southampton.
Buttler showed vintage touch and power after a relatively barren game to record his highest score of a glittering T20 career.
He shared England’s T20 record of 233 – and the world record for second wicket in a T20 international – with captain Harry Brooke, who scored a remarkable innings of 95 not out in 45 as the hosts scored 257-3.
England’s third-highest T20 score and highest ever against India proved too much for the tourists, who scored 201-8 as the world champions suffered a 4-0 series defeat.
Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma hit half-centuries each but Shreyas Iyer’s beleaguered side, who shocked on the field, never looked capable of snatching a consolation win and have now lost the top spot to their opponents.
This is the first time India have lost a five-match T20 series and extended their unwanted record to six consecutive defeats in completed 20-overs matches after shocking defeats to Ireland earlier in the tour are worth forgetting.
The two teams will now face each other in a five-match one-day international series starting at Edgbaston on Tuesday (1100 BST).
